I am a hearty Minnesotan, who enjoys biking, hiking, and traveling. I also like reading, working with people, and using my graphic design skills to contribute to the betterment of humanity.
I completed my Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 2006 at Macalester College, a small, international, liberal-arts school in Minnesota, where I studied cultural anthropology, as well as psychology, and African studies.
Since starting university in 2002, I have traveled and worked abroad in several places, including west and southern Africa, east Asia, Jamaica, India, and Albania in the Balkans (above Greece). In these places, I have done many things from working with an African literature program, to presenting a paper at a conference about peace and non-violence, to studying a minority ethnic group and producing a newspaper on their history.
I spent two months in Nepal in 2009 working with the many Youth Managed Resource Centers around the country, working with youth, and conducting some training in web development. The work being done in the Youth Managed Resource Centers is really exciting, with youth using their energy and capacity to make a difference in their community, and contribute to the development of themselves and their society. Nepal has wonderful people, culture, and landscape.
I recently began working with The Advocates for Human Rights, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights. Through cutting-edge research, education, and advocacy, The Advocates saves lives, fights injustice, restores peace, and builds the human rights movement in the United States and around the world. Several years ago, they opened a school in Nepal and have continued to support it through all the years. I am currently leading a collaborative effort between The Advocates, their Sankhu-Palubari Community School and the YMRC of Sankhu to create a multi-lingual children's book that tells the story of the school through a child's eyes. It is amazing how small the world is, and all that can happen because of technology.
